BEGINNER'S CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP WITH LYNDSAY WRIGHT

Inspired by the manuscript pages in the Art and Nature in the Middle Ages exhibition, our beginner's workshop in medieval calligraphy will teach you about the tools of calligraphy and basic techniques, as well as cover lowercase lettering.  If you are just starting out or are looking for hands-on tips from an expert, this workshop is for you!  We will take a tour through the Art and Nature exhibition before sitting down and learning from local calligrapher Lyndsay Wright.

Level: Beginner
No previous calligraphy experience is necessary.

 

INTERMEDIATE CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP WITH LYNDSAY WRIGHT

Inspired by the manuscript pages in the Art and Nature in the Middle Ages exhibition, our intermediate workshop in calligraphy will teach you lowercase lettering in the medieval style and have you taking home greeting card sets you design!  If you have experience with calligraphy and want to learn a new style, this workshop is for you!  We will take a tour through the Art and Nature exhibition before sitting down and learning from local calligrapher Lyndsay Wright.

Level: Intermediate
Previous experience with broad-edge pen calligraphy is necessary.

LETTERING WORKSHOPS I TEACH

MODERN CALLIGRAPHY I

Add a touch of elegance to your handwritten correspondence by diving into calligraphy with a modern twist.  Learn the basics of pointed pen calligraphy with a fun, whimsical lettering style.  You will learn how to use an oblique pen, nibs and ink, while practicing a lowercase alphabet.

Level: Beginner
No previous calligraphy experience is necessary.

MODERN CALLIGRAPHY II

In this workshop, we’ll expand on the fundamental of calligraphy that were taught in the beginning modern calligraphy class.  You will learn the uppercase letterforms, a little flourishing, and a few tips for envelope addressing.

Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: completion of the Modern Calligraphy I class or other pointed pen experience.

Hand Lettering Basics

Come and learn the basics of hand lettering in this fun, relaxed class.  We will begin with a crash course in the anatomy of type and will learn to draw freeform letters with a variety of drawing instruments while exploring composition ideas.  Students should come to class with a word or short phrase (6 words maximum) that they would like to illustrate.

Level: Beginner
No previous calligraphy or lettering experience is necessary.  

WATERCOLOR LETTERING I

Create beautiful, ethereal stationery and artwork with watercolors.  You will learn to create gorgeous lettering with various paintbrushes.

Level: Beginner
No previous painting or lettering experience is necessary.

WATERCOLOR LETTERING II

We will review and expand on what we learned in the Watercolor Lettering I class, exploring some additionnal watercolor techniques for lettering.  We will also practice some botanical, organic, and geometric accents to enhance our lettering designs.  Although supplies are included in the workshop, students should also bring their supplies from the beginner class: kneaded eraser, pencil, paintbrushes, set of watercolors, and anything else they enjoy working with while using watercolors.

Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: completion of the Watercolor Lettering I class or other painting experience.

BRUSH LETTERING

Give your projects and cards a retro flair by adding some brush lettering.  You will learn how to use brush pens to recall a time when people used rotary dial phones instead of cell phones, and shop windows were painted by hand.

Level: Beginner
No previous lettering experience is necessary.  

CHALKBOARD LETTERING

In this workshop, you will learn to layout and letter a chalkboard, using a quote, a saying, or a party menu as the project.  Students should come to class with either a quote or saying comprised of 5-15 words, or a title and date for their party or event, and 3 menu items, each containing 3-6 ingredients.

No previous lettering experience is necessary.  

STORYBOOK SCRIPT

In this intermediate-level workshop, we’ll learn a curly, feminine lettering style, reminiscent of fairy tales.  You will learn both lowercase and uppercase letterforms, as well as some flourishing.

Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: completion of the Modern Calligraphy I class or other pointed pen experience.

BLACKLETTER

You will learn a Gothic-looking Old English alphabet, using an incredibly versatile tool - the Pilot Parallel pen.  You will learn both lowercase and uppercase letterforms, so this will be a fast-paced course.

Level: Beginner
No previous calligraphy experience is necessary.

 

DESIGN WORKSHOPS I TEACH

THE ART OF ENVELOPES

Envelopes are the gift wrap surrounding the heartfelt sentiments that we send to those we love.  Let's learn to create envelopes as cherished and beautiful as the words that they contain!  We will explore composition ideas, colors, and artistic accents to make our envelopes truly spectacular.  Students should come to class with any addresses that they would like to illustrate, letter, and/or calligraph.

This is a design course; therefore, no letterforms or art will be taught.  

Level: Intermediate
Completion of one of my lettering workshops is recommended, but not required.  No previous design experience is necessary; however, you will enjoy the class more if you are comfortable with the medium that you will use to create your design.

CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING FOR HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING

Jazz up your holiday event with gorgeous, handwritten touches!  In this workshop, we’ll explore details that you can incorporate into your party to give it a finished, personal feel.  We will learn to calligraph / letter place cards, buffet cards, and a chalkboard menu or welcome note.  It will be a really fun morning!

If you are already hosting a specific event, please come prepared with your guest list, menu, and/or message for welcome signage.

This is a design course; therefore, no letterforms or art will be taught.  

Level: Intermediate
Completion of one of my calligraphy classes or the Hand Lettering Basics class.

HOLIDAY/GREETING CARD DESIGN

Come and design your own card to send out to friends and family!  We will focus on exploring composition ideas and learning how to layout your designs to be print-ready.  Students should come to class with the message that they would like to illustrate, letter, and/or calligraph.

This is a design course; therefore, no letterforms or art will be taught.  General art supplies will be available to use.  If there is a particular medium that you prefer working with, please bring it to class.

Level: Intermediate
Completion of one of my other classes is recommended, but not required.  No previous design experience is necessary; however, you will enjoy the class more if you are comfortable with the medium that you will use to create your design.

WATERCOLOR LETTERING HOLIDAY/GREETING CARDS

Add a unique, handpainted personal touch to your holiday season with the skills you learn in this watercolor lettering class!  You will learn to create whimsical lettering and ethereal accents with a paintbrush.  You will then put your new skills to use making some fun gift tags and greeting cards for fun or for the holiday season.  Get in touch with your inner artist and join us for a fun and creative workshop!

Level: Beginner
No previous painting experience is necessary.  

DIGITIZING CALLIGRAPHY AND HAND LETTERING

Take your calligraphy or hand lettering to the next level by learning to digitize your work.  I will teach you how to refine and prepare your lettering in Photoshop.  Then, you will learn to vectorize your lettering in Illustrator.  You will learn to create vector art that retains the original character and imperfections of handwritten lettering, and also how to create more refined final vector art.

Level: Beginner
This class will be geared towards beginners, even students who have never used Photoshop or Illustrator in the past.  This class is likely not a good fit for a student who uses these programs on a daily basis or professionally.
